There’s something special about 20 machines lining up at the Red Rooster in St. Stephen, not just for the ride, but for a purpose. We were there for the 8th Annual Benny Howland Memorial Drive 4 Hunger, and the energy was high. Tthe banter started early when Captain Bagel decided to challenge Real Rookie to a splash contest—a move he’d regret later.
The Reality of the Trail The WCCATV Club 58 trails are a masterpiece, but they aren't for the faint of heart. We saw a side-by-side take a hard hit on a rock, snapping a control arm right off the frame and ending their day on a "trailer of shame." Between the mechanicals and the rising heat, we were lucky to have a rider with a portable spray pump to keep the overheating rads clear. Through it all, Miss My Phone was a powerhouse, tackling fears and pushing through sections she never thought she’d ride.
The Heart of the Event After a late lunch at Oak Bay Snack and Dairy, we took a moment to reflect on what the day was really about. The event organizer shared a message that truly hit home for everyone involved:
"Once again I think we would have made my uncle Benny proud. The generosity of people blows me right away. Thank you to everyone who contributed in making this year's event another great success.
We invite everyone to take part in the 9th Annual Benny Howland Memorial ATV Drive 4 Hunger as we help feed the hunger once again. So tell your friends and let's make this event huge next year!"
The "Real Rookie" Finale With the mission accomplished and stomachs full, we began the trek home. But the trail had one last "tax" to collect. Real Rookie found a slick patch of mud on a hill climb and, in a moment of pure cinematic irony, went over in a slow-motion rollover. He walked away with some bumps and a bruised ego, but it was the "exclamation point" on a day we won't soon forget.
It was a day of community, grit, and some classic Oak Hill Crew chaos. See you all at the 9th annual!
